The Medical Equestrian Association was founded in 1985. The Primary aims of the Association are:
- The improvement of medical cover at equestrian events.
- To provide training for members in the management of equestrian accidents.
- Education of the Equestrian world and First Aid personnel in the hazards of horse riding and the management of equestrian injuries.
- The monitoring and assessment of protective clothing for riders.
- Research into the statistical analysis and prevention of riding accidents.
The Association holds meetings in the spring and autumn of each year. Venues are chosen to try and provide reasonable access for members who are spread throughout the UK and Ireland. There are overseas members in the Antipodes, Africa, America and parts of Europe.
Members represent virtually every equestrian and medical discipline.
Membership is open to registered medical practitioners (Full Membership).
Persons in professions allied to medicine (nurses, physiotherapists, paramedical personnel etc.) may apply for Associate Membership.
Associate members receive all mailings of the Association and may attend all meetings.
The Association is a Registered Charity and contributes to Medical Support at Equestrian Events.
